newsletter Easter Lamb, Fresh Microgreens, and a Week on the Road.
This week felt like one of those weeks — the kind where you spend more time hopping between meetings and events than actually working on the farm.
It’s that time of year when a lot of farmers are in a bit of a slower season, so everybody tries to squeeze in the conferences, meetings, and get-togethers all at once. Funny enough, Kakadoodle tends to move a little differently. Things usually pick up for us in the winter, mellow out some, and then sometimes level off a bit in the summer. But still… this week had us all over the place.
On Tuesday, I was down in Central Illinois meeting with a really good group of farmers to talk about coordinating logistics. There is so much food moving between all of our farms, and if we can figure out ways to make that easier and more efficient, it helps everybody. I truly believe it’s a rising tide when it comes to working with other farms — and honestly, even other marketplaces. The more we can help each other out, the more clean, local food gets into more homes. That matters. Of course, not everybody sees it that way, so navigating those conversations can be a little delicate… which is exactly why that meeting was worth having.
Then on Thursday, I headed to Champaign for an Illinois Extension aggregator meeting, where I got to sit on a panel with a few other aggregators from around the state. We talked through what our businesses actually look like day to day, the issues we’re working through, and where the Extension team might be able to help. And maybe my favorite part? I think I may have found someone who can help us get sheep on our land this year, which would be absolutely amazing.
And then today — Friday — I was up in Chicago for the Food Justice Summit.
So no, it was not the usual week of “getting things done” on the farm in the most obvious way. But that’s also the beauty of having an amazing team. While I was bouncing around the state, they were still making it happen — getting food to the doors of over 300 families this week and getting everything ready for this weekend’s farm market.
What We’ve Got at the Market This Week
Microgreens, microgreens, and more microgreens 🌱
This week we’ve got lots of microgreens. And I mean lots. Plus some fun new varieties.
Chris and his wife from Spira Farm up in Bolingbrook grow these beautiful, crazy-healthy, nutrient-dense microgreens and harvest them fresh for the weekend market. They’re one of those easy little upgrades that make you feel like you’re doing something really good for your family without making life harder. Toss them on eggs, sandwiches, wraps, soups, grain bowls, or honestly just on top of whatever dinner is already happening.
A few current options you can check out here:
They’re fresh, flavorful, and packed with the kind of clean nutrition we love sharing with families.
Bacon & Cheddar Egg Bites are back 🙌
Of course, we’ll also have our Bacon & Cheddar Egg Bites both online and at the market this week.
We sold out last week, so we doubled production and are hoping that does the trick… but also, let’s be honest, let’s try to sell out again!! 😂
These have quickly become my favorite grab-and-go options because they’re made with pasture-raised eggs plus local ingredients from chemical-free farms. They’re simple, protein-packed, and one of those things that makes busy mornings feel just a little more manageable.
A Really Big Win for Egg Bites
We also just got our official first order from Brookhaven Market, so you should be seeing our Egg Bites on the shelves at their Mokena and Burr Ridge locations very soon!
And truly — this part matters.
There’s a fancy grocery word called velocity, which is basically how fast a product moves off store shelves. If we can show strong velocity with our Egg Bites there, it opens the door to more Brookhaven locations carrying them… and even gets the attention of regional distributors.
So yes, I will absolutely let you know as soon as they officially hit the shelves, because when that happens, we need your help showing that local, chemical-free convenience food can move.
Easter Special: Limited Lamb Cuts 🐑
This one is kind of fun.
We had a customer reach out asking for lamb shoulder or leg of lamb for Easter, and Matt and Lea from Abundant Pastures have a very limited supply of both. We’re making a special trip down to pick up whatever gets ordered, so if you want one of these premium cuts for your Easter table, now’s the time.
Here’s what’s available:
These are the kind of centerpiece cuts that make a holiday meal feel extra special — beautiful for serving, deeply flavorful, and a really meaningful way to celebrate with food raised the right way.
Thanks for Being Part of This
Weeks like this remind me that farming today doesn’t always look like just being in the barn or out in the pasture. Sometimes it looks like meetings, panels, hard conversations, partnerships, and figuring out how to build something bigger than just your own farm.
And at the end of the day, it’s all for the same reason: getting more clean, local food into the hands of more families.
Thank you for being part of that with us.
See you at market 💛
