newsletter Fall Cover Crops, Rainbow Eggs, and a Big Family Thank You 💛
This week has been one of those busy but good ones on the farm. We finally mowed down the summer grass and got our fall cover crops planted — just in time before the rain hit! There’s something so satisfying about watching those little seeds go in, knowing they’re doing important work beneath the surface.
These cover crops are helping to restore land that had chemicals applied in the past, bringing it back to life naturally. Over time, this field will become a thriving pasture for multiple species — cows, sheep, goats, and chickens — all grazing together and doing their part to rebuild healthy, living soil.
And speaking of growing… our chicks from the spring are all grown up and starting to lay! 🥚 We’ll soon have beautiful rainbow eggs for sale — blues, greens, browns, and creams — the whole palette. The girls (and a few roosters that snuck in) just “graduated” to their new home, which we’re calling Coop 4, set up inside our second high tunnel. This new setup keeps their feed indoors and helps discourage wild birds from sneaking in (which, we think, is how our last flock caught the bird flu). It’s all part of our ongoing effort to keep our animals healthy and happy.
💕 A Family Effort (and some Little Arizona Rain)
Right now, I’m writing to you from a cozy little coffee shop in Chandler, AZ, where — believe it or not — it’s raining! The remnants of a tropical storm are rolling through, and we’re here for MariKate’s brother’s outdoor wedding. Fingers crossed it clears up in the next couple of hours!
While we’re here celebrating, Stephanie and my mom, Kathy, are holding down the fort back at the farm — and honestly, we couldn’t do this without them (and so many other family members who’ve been pitching in). This whole season of transition has reminded us just how much family makes everything possible. From gathering eggs and feeding animals to keeping chemical-free food flowing to our communities, their love and hard work keep the heartbeat of Kakadoodle steady.
MariKate actually wrote a Facebook post about Kathy. As MariKate wrote... She’s one of those quiet, behind-the-scenes heroes who makes sure everything keeps running — both on the farm and in our family. We’re so thankful for her (and all the moms out there doing the same kind of magic every day).
🥚 Too Many Eggs (Want Some?)
Funny enough, our biggest “problem” this week is having too many eggs! We’ve been sending them to food banks, but one had to pause pickups due to funding freezes — so now we’re overflowing with eggs.
If you’ve got friends or family who might love Kakadoodle, let us know!
With your next order, we’ll throw in some extra eggs for you to share. It’s a great way to help us spread the word and introduce new families to our food and mission.
Please keep those carts full this week! 🛒 Last month we hit a new record in sales, which is such an exciting milestone — but we’ve still got a bit of a journey ahead before becoming fully financially self-sustaining (we’re about halfway there!).
Every time you choose Kakadoodle, you’re helping us grow — not just crops and chickens, but a more sustainable, connected way of living. So here’s to rain (wherever it falls), strong roots, and the families that make it all possible. 💛
