article That Dust Storm. And Cover Crops.

What a week! MariKate and I have been out trying to mow down our 74 acres with our little tractor. What really needed to happen was a light "discing" of the land—something to turn up the weeds and give us a fresh starting point to establish our pasture. But hey, we were working with what we had. Back and forth, back and forth on our little John Deere, getting the field ready to plant our cover crops.
If you’re wondering, what are cover crops? Yeah, we didn’t really know either when we first started. They’re basically plants you grow in between the big harvests (like corn and soy), and they help restore soil health. And—come to find out—they also help prevent stuff like the crazy dust storm we just had blow through.
Anyway, just as we were about to plant our cover crop seeds, a young farmer called and offered to help with his bigger tractor. He showed up, and in ONE hour, he disced the entire area MariKate and I had been mowing for two weeks. And I got to ride along and see how a modern tractor with GPS works… wild stuff.
While we were riding, we started talking about that dust storm—and whether modern agriculture might be part of the problem. When I got back, I did some digging and ended up writing this article:
👉 Is This the New Dust Bowl?
Turns out, there are a bunch of factors involved, but yeah, the way we farm today definitely isn’t helping. And that’s where regenerative agriculture comes in.
🐄 Why Regenerative Farming Matters (and How Our Animals Help)
One of the big principles behind regenerative agriculture is rotating multiple species on the land—just like nature does. Think migrating bison, grazing cattle, pigs in the mud, chickens eating bugs. Animals doing animal things. It all plays a huge role in building up soil health and creating a thriving, balanced ecosystem.
And the bonus? The meat that comes from these animals is healthier for us and the planet. Win-win.
🦬 Bison
Bison are amazing land managers. Their natural movement and grazing patterns help build and fertilize the soil. Nature knew what it was doing.
